What a tracker tag can do, and what it cannot

Range against network, the 80 decibel ping, why ours are iOS only, and the coin cell rule every household with a child should know.

A tracker tag is a small radio with a loud voice. It does not know where it is. It says hello to nearby phones, and the phones do the knowing. Once that is clear, most of the confusion about what a tag can promise disappears.

Flyruit tags are MFi certified for Apple Find My, which means Apple, not us, sets the bar they had to clear. This page describes what that buys and where it stops.

Two different ways of finding something

Close by, the tag is a doorbell. Open Find My, press the button or ask Siri, and the tag plays an 80 decibel tone. Within about 130 feet that is the whole trick, and it is the one that finds keys in a coat, a wallet under a cushion or a remote inside a sofa.

Far away, the tag is a message in a bottle. It broadcasts a rotating identifier, any passing iPhone that hears it reports the position to Apple, and you see the last place it was heard. Nobody is watching for you, and the tag has no cellular connection of its own. That is why a bag in an airport shows up quickly and a bag in an empty field does not.

Why ours are iOS only, and why we print it

The MFi certification our tags carry is an Apple programme. It gives the tag a place in the Find My app that comes with an iPhone, with no second app to install and nothing to subscribe to. It also excludes Android, and no firmware update will change that.

We print the limit on every product page because the alternative is a return. A tag bought for a household that runs on Android is a tag that does nothing at all, and finding that out after the parcel arrives is a poor day for everyone.

Privacy runs in both directions

The location of your things is not stored on the tag. It travels encrypted through the Find My network, and only your Apple ID opens it. That is Apple's design, and it is the reason the tag has no account of its own.

The other direction matters more. Since a tag can be hidden in a bag, iOS warns a person when an unfamiliar tag is travelling with them. That warning is a feature, not a fault: the same system that finds a lost case also stops the case being used to follow somebody. If you find our tag with your things and it is not yours, follow the instructions your phone shows you and treat it as a device to disable, not a curiosity.

The coin cell, and the rule that comes with it

Each tag runs on a CR2032 coin cell, the flat silver battery in half the remotes in a house. It is replaceable without a tool, which is what makes a tag last past its first year.

It is also the part of this product that carries a real hazard, and the national safety guidance is unambiguous.

So the rules are short. Keep loose cells away from children, change the battery over a table rather than a carpet, and put the old one straight into tape and then into a battery collection box. The same guidance is blunt about mouths.

If a child may have swallowed one, this is an emergency room, not a wait and see. The guidance lists the National Battery Ingestion Hotline on 800-498-8666 and the Poison Help Line on 800-222-1222.

Setting one up without reading anything

Pull the tab that separates the battery from the contacts. Hold the tag near an unlocked iPhone. The phone offers to add an item, you give it a name from the list or type your own, and the tag is live. There is no account to create and no app to download, because the app is already on the phone.

Name the tags for the thing rather than the person. Keys reads better on a map at midnight than Dad, and a tag that changes hands keeps its meaning.

Share the item with the household. Find My allows up to five people on one item, which turns a personal tracker into a family one, and means the person who is home can ring the keys the person who is out has lost.

Then leave it alone. A tag needs nothing until its battery does, and the temptation to check it daily is the fastest way to get bored of it.

What the numbers on the box actually mean

130 feet is the distance for a direct conversation between your phone and the tag, in the open. Through two brick walls it is a good deal less, which is normal for Bluetooth and not a defect.

80 decibels is roughly the level of a busy street heard from the pavement. It is loud enough to find a bag in a room and not loud enough to hear from the garden. Inside a suitcase in a wardrobe, expect to open the wardrobe first.

The tag weighs 0.015 pounds and measures 1.44 by 1.22 by 0.34 inches, which is the size of a large button. It fits a wallet slot, though the ring loop is the fitting most people end up using.

Where to put a tag, and where not to

Good places are the ones you leave behind: keys, a wallet, a work bag, a suitcase, a bike, a camera case, a set of car documents. Anything that has walked off before is a candidate.

Poor places are the ones that move on their own. A tag on a dog collar tells you where the dog was when a phone last passed, which in a park at six in the morning is nowhere useful. A tag on a car parked in a rural driveway has the same problem. For those jobs, a tracker with its own cellular connection is the right tool, and we do not make one.

The two colour packs exist for a small reason that turns out to matter. When four tags look identical, the household stops knowing which is which, and the ping becomes guesswork. Black for one person, white for another, and the map reads at a glance.

Travel, where a tag earns its keep

An airport is the best environment a Find My tag will ever see. Thousands of phones pass every hour, so a tagged case reports its position often enough to follow on a map, and a case that goes to the wrong city says so before the airline does.

That is worth being precise about. The tag does not tell you your bag is lost. It tells you where the bag was when a phone last walked past it, which in a baggage hall is a minute ago and in a locked storage room may be last night. Both are useful, and they are not the same claim.

Put one tag inside the case and, if you check two bags, put the second tag in the second case rather than both in one. A tag in a coat pocket in the cabin tells you where you are, which you already know.

Airlines increasingly ask for the tag position when a bag goes missing, and a screenshot from Find My shortens that conversation. Take it before you leave the airport, while the position is fresh.

Living with tags for a year

The tags disappear into a routine. Most people stop noticing them until the morning something is missing, which is exactly the intended experience. What people do notice is the battery, once, around a year in, when the tag stops answering.

Keep two spare cells in the drawer where the tags live. Replacing one takes a minute, and a tag with a dead battery is a tag that fails at the only moment it was bought for.

The lanyard and ring loop in the box do more work than they look like they do. A tag rattling loose in a bag ends up under the lining, and a tag under a lining is hard to hear even at 80 decibels.

Two tags a household actually uses

After a year of watching how people use them, two patterns keep coming back. The first is the keys tag, which lives on the ring and earns its keep on the mornings when the house is late. The second is the bag tag, which sits in whatever is carried to work and is never thought about until a train seat keeps it.

The rest tend to drift. A tag in a coat pocket migrates to a drawer, and a tag on a laptop case gets removed when the case is changed. That is why a four pack usually settles into two working tags and two spares rather than four permanent posts, and why we would rather say so than sell the idea that a household needs eight.

Children's things are the exception worth mentioning. A tag in a school bag survives being thrown around and answers the question that gets asked at half past three, but it tracks the bag rather than the child, and no tag from anybody should be sold as a way to watch a person.

For a bicycle, put the tag somewhere a thief will not look and the owner will not lose: under the saddle, inside a frame bag, taped beneath a rack. A tag in an obvious place gets found, and a found tag helps nobody.

The short version

A tag finds things that stay where they were put. Near you it rings, far from you it reports where it was last heard, and it does neither of those on Android. It runs on a coin cell that a child must never reach.

Inside those limits it is one of the few gadgets that pays for itself the first time it works. Outside them, no tag from anybody does what people hope a tag does.
